Mount Rwenzori, also known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” is Africa’s third-highest mountain range, standing at 5,109 meters (16,762 feet) above sea level at its highest peak, Margherita Peak. Located on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mount Rwenzori is famous for its stunning scenery, unique vegetation, and challenging climbing routes.

Experience Highlights

  • Diverse Vegetation Zones: As you ascend, you’ll pass through tropical rainforests, bamboo forests, heath and moorland zones, and alpine zones with unique flora. The mountain’s vegetation is marked by giant lobelias, groundsel, and heather, creating an otherworldly landscape.
  • Glacier-Capped Peaks: Margherita Peak is one of the few places in Africa with permanent glaciers and snow. The peaks are a rare sight in equatorial Africa, offering a surreal experience for mountaineers and nature enthusiasts.
  • Wildlife Encounters: Mount Rwenzori is home to diverse wildlife, including unique bird species, primates like blue monkeys and colobus monkeys, as well as the rare Rwenzori turaco. The lower forests also harbor elephants and chimpanzees.
  • Challenging Treks and Climbs: The Rwenzori Mountains offer some of Africa’s most challenging treks. Multi-day hikes lead climbers through rugged terrain, rock formations, and icy summits. Treks vary in difficulty and length, with options from easier forest hikes to technical climbs up to Margherita Peak.

Practical Details

  • Best Time to Visit: The dry seasons (December–February and June–August) offer the best conditions for trekking, as paths are more accessible and weather is relatively stable.
  • Trekking Routes: Popular routes include the Central Circuit for experienced climbers and the Kilembe Trail for scenic views and birdwatching. Climbs usually require 6–10 days, depending on the route and fitness level.
  • Required Permits: Visitors need permits to enter the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, and it’s recommended to hire a local guide for safety and support during the trek.
  • Accommodation: There are huts and campsites along the main trekking routes. Base lodges and eco-camps are also available for pre- and post-trek relaxation.
